Christie blows it on Koran Burner

The NY Daily News reported today that the man who burned the Koran at Ground Zero has been fired from his job at NJ Transit and the decision was supported by Governor Chris Christie.  From the Daily News:

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday backed the controversial firing of a transit worker who burned pages of the Koran outside a planned mosque near Ground Zero.

NJTransit fired assistant train coordinator Derek Fenton Monday, just two days after he ripped pages from the Koran and torched them with a lighter on the ninth anniversary of 9/11.

“We’re supportive of the action taken by NJTransit,” Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak told the Daily News.

Let me be clear that I think the stunt that Mr. Fenton pulled was in poor taste and likely offensive not only to Muslims but many others who do not find trashing people’s religious beliefs for sport very appealing.  It was stupid and he should be roundly criticized for it.  However, he should not have been fired from his job at NJ Transit and the Governor should have kept quiet on the entire issue.  I also expect that NJ Transit is going to have some legal repercussions over the firing as they should.

I wonder if the Governor would have supported the firing of say…a teacher who burned a bible at a Trenton protest or a unionized state worker who burned the flag at one of their many protests against the taxpayers.  Somehow I don’t think so.

I originally felt the same way Dennis does about the firing. (I have mixed feelings on the Koran-burning itself.) Now I think the issue might be a little more complex than that. One interesting thread was over at Lawrence Auster’s View From The Right — a traditionalist site with views that some might consider extreme, but that is worth reading for a thoughtful far-right opinion.

I am, in any event, happy that people are trying to help Mr. Fenton get a new job.
